About Fijian Kava

Fijian kava, or "yaqona," is a traditional beverage made from the root of the Piper methysticum plant, deeply rooted in Fijian culture. Consumed during ceremonies, gatherings, and casual settings, it symbolises hospitality, respect, and unity.

Kava is prepared by grinding the root into a powder and mixing it with water to create an earthy, mildly sedative drink. It often marks the start of important events like tribal meetings, weddings, or welcoming ceremonies. Sharing kava is a bonding ritual, reinforcing relationships and togetherness. Its calming effects have spread its popularity beyond Fiji, while its cultural significance remains strong at home.

About Vanuatu Kava

Vanuatu kava, made from the root of the Piper methysticum plant, is central to the cultural and spiritual life of the islands. Used for centuries in ceremonies and social gatherings, it symbolises hospitality, respect, and unity. Traditionally prepared by grinding or chewing the root and mixing it with water, the earthy drink is shared in groups to promote connection and relaxation.

At the heart of kava culture is the nakamal—a communal meeting place where people come together to drink kava and strengthen social bonds. More than just a drink, kava is a proud expression of Vanuatu’s identity.
